Valerie and Mark on Foolkiller Folk
Hi! When we’re on Foolkiller Folk, more often than not we’ll be playing the best folk music from England, Ireland, Scotland, and more far-flung outposts of the Celts like Galicia (Spain), Brittany (France), Wales and Cornwall (Great Britain), Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia (Canada), or of course the world-class Irish and Scots music being made here in the States.
We like programming theme shows. In recent years, to list a few, we’ve covered “Whales, Women and Grog”, “Love’s Obstacles”, “Beggars, Tramps, and Gypsies”, three of the seasons, instrumental tune types in Irish music, sea shanties, Burns Night, the Jacobite Rebellions, and we’ve produced an annual Christmas show. We also design shows around artists who will be appearing soon in Kansas City or nearby, including annual KC Irish Fest shows, as a way of encouraging our listeners to take in live music whenever they can. For the same reason, we do a number of local artist shows each year, to showcase particularly the live Celtic music scene in KC. We’ve had shows we call “Critic’s Choice”, covering the artists and releases selected on “Ten Best” lists by prominent music critics like Siobhan Long and Earle Hitchner. We do shows on sub-genres, like Celtic Iberia, or Cape Breton music. We like introducing our audience to young artists with talent, energy and potential. And we do “Mailbag” programs, selecting the best tracks from whatever we’ve added to our collection most recently – we make a special effort to keep informed about new releases we can bring the audience in KC. Or we might simply bring you a varied program of old favorites.
Because our musical interests are broad, we do sometimes break out into other folk music territories. We’ve done shows on Piedmont blues, old-time fiddle, banjo and song, medicine show music, early gospel, French, Italian and Scandinavian folk, “American Heritage in Song”, and a politically-oriented series we call “My Name is Buddy”, taking off from a recent release of that name by Ry Cooder.
So the only thing you can be guaranteed when we’re on the air is that you’ll be hearing some of the very best in traditional music. We’ll mix songs and instrumentals, pieces slow and fast, words of love and death, politics and humor. And when we’re not on the air, we’ll be enjoying the programming of our colleagues, the Peterses and Suckiels, and their unique approaches to even more great traditional music!
