2014 Homelessness Marathon Airs on KKFI 90.1 FM Starting at 10:00 pm

KKFI 90.1 FM is proud to be airing a portion of the Homelessness Marathon, which will once again bring the voices of homeless people into America’s homes. “I wish we could get their bodies inside, too,” comments Jeremy Weir Alderson, the broadcast’s founder, “but we’re doing the best thing we can, by showing America why this problem should be, can be and must be solved.”

The six-hour live nationwide radio broadcast will originate from Brattleboro, Vermont, starting at 6:00 pm Central Time. KKFI will be airing the live broadcast from 10:00 pm to 12 Midnight Central Time. See below for details.

Free Speech TV will air a live video stream for the entire six-hour show. You can watch the video stream right here on KKFI’s website.

The broadcast, which originated from HopeFaith Ministries in Kansas City in 2012, as well as from Detroit and Katrina-ravaged Mississippi, among other places, features live in-depth discussions with homeless people. The broadcast also takes calls, so people living in their homes can talk with people living on the streets. It will originate from in front of the First Baptist Church of Brattleboro, which provides the space for Brattleboro’s overflow shelter, operated by the Brattleboro Drop-In Center. A few years ago, the church sold its prize possession – a Tiffany stained glass window – so that it could continue its mission, including its service to the poor.

The Homelessness Marathon’s mission is to raise consciousness about homelessness and poverty in America and around the world.

The 16th Annual Homelessness audio signal will also be available for free to all radio stations over the Public Radio Satellite System, the Pacifica Ku-band and Pacifica’s Audioport.

KKFI 90.1 FM Homelessness Marathon Broadcast Schedule

10:00-11:00 p.m. – This is hour #5 of the Homelessness Marathon, which starts with a short audio report titled “Homeless but Powered by Green Energy,” a story about how one man uses solar panels to heat, work and live outside in a legal encampment. Producer: Cori Princell.

This hour includes “More reports from Around The Country” (segment times approximate): Jeff Girrard, who blogs under the name jeff4justice, has lived in his car for four years. He has traveled extensively in his rolling home, and has interviewed many others in the same situation. Paul Boden, field director for the Western Regional Advocacy Project and member of the Homelessness Marathon board, is spearheading a campaign in California to get a “Homeless Bill of Rights” passed by the legislature. He will be joined by Ibrahim Mubarak, the dean of the Portland, Oregon tent community.

11:00-12:00 Midnight – Hour #6 in the Homelessness Marathon starts with a short audio piece “Last Days of Duroville: Mobile Homes for the Poor in Rural California,” produced by Lisa Moorehouse.

This hour also includes a longer report titled ”Where Do We Go From Here?,” a conversation about how do we get our country to actually address the problems of the poor and do something about them. Participants to include: Cheri Honkala, 2012 Green Party vice-presidential candidate, founder of the Poor People’s Economic Human Rights Campaign and board member of the Homelessness Marathon; Christopher Curtis, staff attorney at Vermont Legal Aid and co-chair of the Governor’s Council on Pathways Out of Poverty.

Homelessness Marathon Video Feeds

The locally-produced video from Brattleboro will air nationally on Free Speech Television (FSTV). Starting at 6:00 p.m. Central Time on February 19, all six hours of the Homelessness Marathon will be on FSTV’s website, http://www.freespeech.org. Starting at 8 pm, the last five hours will also be on FSTV’s two satellite channels, channel 9415 on the Dish Network and channel 348 on DirecTV (and also on BCTV’s channel 8).
