BOOM! The Sonics Invade Knucklehead’s

Back on June 20, garage rock pioneers the Sonics from Tacoma, Washington played a blistering hour and ten minute set to a moderate crowd at Knucklehead’s in Kansas City.  Local support was provided by the Latenight Callers and the Quivers.

The weather was steamy during the day but cooled off just in time for the rock to heat things back up.  As the sun was going down, the Latenight Callers took the outdoor stage and provided a set of dark, noir flavored dance tunes.

Then came the Quivers,  The Quivers are a band that is clearly influenced by the Sonics, soul, garage rock and blues.  They played a set full of uptempo rockers that set the mood for the legendary Sonics to follow.

The Sonics took the stage just after 10:30 with “Cinderella” off their second album “BOOM”.  It was just the beginning of what would prove to be an incredible set hitting all the classics and several covers.

Despite the Sonics being cranked and the club rocking, the crowd could clearly be heard singing tune after tune.  I was really blown away at how hard these guys rocked the songs they wrote 50 years ago.  If you closed your eyes, you would have never guessed it’s been that long since they released any new music.

The Sonics show was easily one of my top three favorite shows in the last year.  Check it out:
