When it’s freezing out or super-hot, and you walk into a building and sigh with relief, you probably don’t thank the workers who insulated those buildings for your comfort. For over a hundred years, the Insulators Local 27 members have been insulating in our schools, hospitals, work places and public buildings.  This week on the Heartland Labor Forum we’ll talk to Business Manager Chuck Martin. Then, we’ll catch up with the Missouri Works Initiative's Apprenticeship Ready Program, which trains future skilled craftworkers, and speak with three recent graduates as they embark into their chosen trades. We go where the music leads us, first live at home with trumpeter Wendell Brunious and his New Orleans All Stars. Wendell is from a famed New Orleans Creole jazz family and is now the music director of Preservation Hall. Then we visit with the eccentric and witty songmaker and multi-instrumentalist Susan Werner with roots in rural Iowa. Susan’s stories in song are comedic and serious takes on religion, queerness, climate change and social responsibility. Plus words and music from Big Mama Thornton, Ella Fitzgerald, Johnny Cash and the Five Satins.

Barbara Alice Mann, Ph.D., is a longtime Professor of Humanities at the University of Toledo. Among her numerous books are "Daughters of Mother Earth" (paperback as "Make a Beautiful Way") and "Iroquoian Women: The Gantowisas." She is an Ohio Bear Clan Senece community member and lives in her Ohio homeland. This talk was her keynote speech to the event A (M)otherworld Is Possible, which was held in Toronto and was embedded in the 2nd World Congress on Matriarchal Studies, 2009. She contrasts the all-inclusive indigenous world with hierarchically imposed culture.
