Nilufar

Nilufar Movahedi’s family emigrated from Tehran, Iran to Kansas City, Missouri when she was the tender age of ten. She arrived with no knowledge of the United States or the English language. Though Tehran is not unlike other large metropolitan cities of the world and the four seasons are similar to those of Kansas City, Nilufar struggled with homesickness for the culture and geography of her home-country. She grew up listening to radio and it has been an important outlet to her for a long time; she enjoys independent radio.

The opportunity to program a show on KKFI 90.1 FM filled a void for Nilufar early on and it has been an invaluable learning experience. Her show went on the air in 1993 as one of the first English-language Iranian radio-magazine shows in the United States. When the opportunity opened up for Nilufar to host the program, it supported a connection with her country of origin yet permitted a level of detachment because of the degree of intellectual impartiality necessary to appeal to a broad audience. Being a radio show producer has served as a way to connect with and effectively communicate with other people.
