Inspired
Inspired is the nation's leading public radio show about faith, ethics and spirituality. Each week we offer you analyses of the big headlines alongside lesser-told stories – those of Orthodox Jewish artists and African-American atheists, Muslim feminists and spiritual seekers. Through these stories, a rough sketch of our country’s religious landscape begins to emerge. It’s a marketplace of beliefs and ideas too complex for sound bites, and too important to ignore.
Part I
This is a special edited version of Inspired’s first live show, which occurred in November of 2018. The topic is One Family, Many Beliefs, in which we and the audience explore the many dynamics of being part of a diverse family. We start the event with an interview with Susan Katz Miller, author of Being Both: Embracing Two Religions in One Interfaith Family.
Part II
We continue our live show with three storytellers. Susan Katz Miller kicks us off with the stories of interfaith unions in her family. Then, an audience member tells the tale of finding family in a stranger and uncovering their shared past. Last, our featured storyteller recalls her struggle to square her Egyptian and American identities.
Part III
We hear from more storytellers. First, another featured storyteller tells us about getting married, as a pagan person and to a Catholic. Then, an audience member shares her story about a young man who becomes like a son to her, and their enduring connection even when he moves back home, on the other side of the globe. Finally, another audience member tells us about growing up Hindu and planning the wild weddings of her daughters, who marry into Jewish and Christian families.
