KYLE SELLEY is a Kansas City-based artist best known for his Firework Residue Paintings which explore ideas surrounding nostalgia, spirituality, and the sublime. KC Studio Magazine has referred to his flatwork as “naturally celestial” and “suggestive of infinite space.” Selley builds composition playfully and intuitively, reminiscent of abstract expressionism and artists such as Jackson Pollock and Wassily Kandinsky. He references artist Cai Guo-Qiang, but his materials and processes are entirely different.
Selley’s Firework Art utilizes mediums such as videography, digital imagery, performance, ceramics, works on paper, works on canvas, and works on glass/plexiglass. His work set a new precedent in artistic techniques incorporating firework residue. Selley has been nourishing a relationship with fireworks since early childhood. He was using them in creative and experimentative ways long before he felt compelled to create traditional artwork.
Selley is currently represented by SNW Gallery in Manhattan, Kansas, and sponsored by Dominator Fireworks in Beijing, China. He graduated from Johnson County Community College with an Associate of Arts degree, studied sculpture and ceramics at the University of Tasmania, and graduated from the Kansas City Art Institute with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.
Beggars Table is honored to host Spiritual Rendering, a collaborative exhibition by Ben Parks and Kyle Selley. Ben Parks works with large-scale canvas paintings to capture the essence of a soul. Each step and layer of paint mirrors a life experience and though not all layers of paint are visible, they affect the outcome of the whole just as the subconscious mind affects our outer lives.
Kyle Selley uses fireworks to create his current body of work. He is studying to understand why we are drawn to spectacles of light by approaching the composition in an exploratory way. The results simulate abstracted cosmic explosions, frozen in time.
Together their artwork is united through color, scale, and motivation. The deep and vibrant shades of blue allow for a cohesive curation of visual intrigue. These monolithic paintings are first recognized from across the room and progressively provoke engagement on an intimate level. The viewer begins to study the minute details within the vast amount of visual information provided and one begins to notice a subtle revealing of the artist’s process.
Please join us for a spirited and thought-provoking exhibition filled with large, colorful paintings. Brilliant portraits and fiery abstractions meld together gracefully and provide viewers with a transcendental space of contemplation.

MARY WOOLRIDGE – JENN NUSSBECK; The Parade Of Hearts is a regional, community-wide event, that will showcase local artists through beautifully created Hearts placed throughout the KC region.
From March 2022 to May 2022 the Parade Of Hearts will celebrate artists, historic areas, and the love of our communities. It will bring people together, make communities stronger and create an economic impact in the Kansas City region to help many affected by the events of 2020. Our goal is to connect with many community artists so that the Parade of Hearts is not created “for” the Kansas City region but “by” and “with” those people and organizations that are related to a community: students, parents, families, artists, partner organizations, schools, government agencies, beneficiaries, and more. Anyone and everyone that considers him or herself an artist is invited to participate in the Parade.
The Heart Sculptures created by Kansas City area artists will be the highlight of the Parade Of Heart event. Our hope is that 150-200 beautiful and inspiring Heart Sculptures will be placed in the following counties: Johnson, Jackson, Douglas, Cass, Clay, Platte and Wyandotte.
Our pillars of support include Health & Wellness (University of Kansas Health System), Education (MARC), Small/Minority Owned Businesses (Alt-Cap), Arts & Culture (Local & Regional Artists), and Hospitality & Tourism (Visit KC Foundation). Not only will the Hearts bring life back to our region, a Parade Of Hearts App is being developed to provide information surrounding the event. It will include a tour of the hearts, the artist’s inspiration, historical and other information about the area where the hearts are placed, among other things. Each artist selected will be part of a movement to make our communities stronger, create economic impact, and engage the public to help many who have been affected by the events of 2020/2021. Together, we are better. Thank you for your consideration and interest. We’d love for you to paint your hearts out!
The events of 2020, which continue to affect us today, have greatly impacted the world and our region. It has changed many people and through that change a group of business influencers, Chase McAnulty (Charlie Hustle), Tucker Trotter (Dimensional Innovations), Shawn Long (KU Health Systems), and Bob Kendrick, (Negro League Baseball Museum), opened their hearts and created an event that has a single, powerful vision: To Unite the Kansas City region around the common purpose of making our community stronger.
The KC region has a long history with the heart, from pins worn by railroad workers in the 1900s to banners on Plaza light poles in the 50’s and 60’s, to the patch on the sleeve of the 1942 Kansas City Monarchs baseball jersey, displayed at the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City. In 2011, Charlie Hustle began selling KC Heart t-shirts, pulling inspiration from Kansas City’s rich heritage and celebrating its location in the heart of America. And, in 2019, the KCADC adopted the KC Heart as the official global brand of the Kansas City region.
