ARTSPEAK RADIO welcomes musicians Steve Tulipana, Maria Cuevas, & Kian Byrne who share their contribution to “THE STAGE IS YOUR CYMBAL.” Have you ever wondered what happens on or off stage in the lives of performers? Musicians, singers, and songwriters share their stories from the Green Room, house concerts, backstage, performance space, and on the road that offers a slice of their lives seldom seen. Join us for stories where we’ll uncover the humorous, dramatic, life changing, and mind blowing experience from their view.

STEVE TULIPANA is the co-owner of recordBar. Steve studied video, fine arts & painting at UMKC, where he graduated in 1991. Steve is a founding member of influential KC bands: Season To Risk, Roman Numerals, Thee Water MoccaSins, Sie Lieben Maschinen, and Unknown Pleasures. With Shawn Sherrill, he is co-owner of recordBar and miniBar. Along with Outer Reaches, and a full calendar of shows, Steve Tulipana also performs with The Band That Fell To Earth – in Tribute to David Bowie.

MARIA CUEVAS is lead vocalist and guitarist playing acoustic, electric and traditional Mexican stringed instruments for MARIA THE MEXICAN – a Mexicana/Americana/indie blues rock/funk/soul fusion – a true hybrid of Mexican folklore and rock ’n roll delivered in both English and Spanish. Founded by Maria, sister Tess (vocals and violin) and guitarist / songwriter D. Garrett Nordstrom (a veteran of the KC/Midwest club scene with 3 releases by the alt-R&B group The Garrett Nordstrom Situation)

On stage there is an amalgam of traditional Mexican and American rock instrumentation – drums, bass, electric guitars, acoustic guitars, traditional Mexican stringed instruments, pedal steel guitar, congas and percussion, trumpet, keyboards. And a passionate delivery of American roots music forms dosed with traditional Mexican harmonic and rhythmic influences alongside traditional Mexican music – Mariachi, Cumbia and more. The repertoire comes to life with original music – from incendiary love songs to social and political commentary – written and arranged in collaborations between Maria and Garrett Nordstrom and penned in both English and Spanish.

KIAN BYRNE was playing music before he could form complete sentences. Originally a fiddle player at the age of 3, Byrne discovered his dad’s drum set and couldn’t stop experimenting with various sounds, isntruments and styles. Byrne also grew up at KC Irish Fest – busking on festival grounds – until someone would notice. Since then, he’s honed skills within multiple genres and instruments – from classical violin in the Youth Symphony to reggae to Celtic Rock as a drummer and multi-instrumentalist of The Elders. Byrne’s debut album “Up & Down”, highlights his songwriting and instrumentation.
