Arts Connect Topeka-Don’t miss this opportunity to see Latin Grammy-nominated band Making Movies performing for the first time in Topeka at 8pm on May 3, 2025 at ArtsConnect (909 N Kansas Ave, Topeka KS 66608) in the heart of the NOTO Arts & Entertainment District.
Making Movies is an internationally acclaimed band based in KC. Their sound is rooted in the rich traditions of Panamá – a crisol de razas – offering listeners an experience that transcends genre as it embodies the extraordinary and the familiar simultaneously.
ArtsConnect is hosting this performance as an opportunity to raise funds for programs that benefit artists in Topeka and to shine a light on the role that music can play in preserving, honoring and uplifting all of our stories.
Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Doors open at 7:30p. We have done our best to make this unique experience affordable. If you are able to make an additional contribution to support the work of ArtsConnect, it would be greatly appreciated.
ABOUT THE BAND- Founded by Enrique Chi, a songwriter, musician, filmmaker, and activist, the Latin Grammy-nominated band Making Movies serves as the primary platform for Chi’s creative mission.
Described by NPR as “Perhaps one of the most unique groups around today, Making Movies is sensual, smoky, and seductive,” the band’s accomplishments include collaborations with legendary artists such as Rubén Blades, performances at major international festivals, and tours with notable acts such as Los Lobos, Ozomatli, Hurray For the Riff Raff, Las Cafeteras, and Flor De Toloache.
Chi is also producing AMERI’KANA TV, a National Endowment for the Arts-funded documentary series that explores the history of American music, continuing their mission to inspire and educate. Their next studio album is set to be released in 2025.
The band is committed to representing their mixed identity of Black and Latino culture and has been a vocal influence in the national health conversation around music as medicine. For more and other community impact projects, see the group’s nonprofit Art As Mentorship.

New live EP- Genre-defying rock band Making Movies is set to release a new live EP titled Baúl de las Movies: Rocky Mountain Folks Festival 2024 (En Vivo) on April 25.
Captured during their 2024 magnetic set at the Rocky Mountain Folks Festival in Lyons, Colorado, the EP offers a raw and electrifying glimpse into the band’s dynamic live energy and genre-blending spirit.
The 5-track collection includes a standout performance of “Nadie Sabe (rock’n’roll),” a powerful anthem that nods to the band’s rock roots while giving fans an early taste of their highly anticipated full-length album due out later this year.
Marking Making Movies’ first major U.S. festival appearance, the performance at Rocky Mountain Folks Festival was a milestone moment in the band’s journey—and one they’ll never forget.
“I love that we have a record of that wild and special day,” says Enrique Chi of Making Movies. “The mid-set downpour turned into a blessing—though we had to pause the show, when we returned, dancing in the rain was a pure expression of joy. We are grateful that those folks opened up their space and hearts to us, giving us the opportunity to road test some new songs and prepare for the next chapter for Making Movies.”
The Baúl de las Movies series is a nod to the band’s ongoing effort to open up their archives and share treasured recordings from the road. This latest installment captures the spontaneity and soul of a band known for merging Latin rhythms with psychedelic rock, folk storytelling, and political urgency.
Making Movies continues to carve a unique space in the music landscape, building bridges across cultures and generations. With this release, they invite listeners into the vibrant world they’ve created—live, unfiltered, and alive with possibility.
Baúl de las Movies: Rocky Mountain Folks Festival 2024 (En Vivo) will be available on all digital platforms April 25.
