HUGO XIMELLO-SALIDO- Resplandores: The Ancestral Duality of the Muxe.
Temporary Exhibition | Opening: May 2, 2025 | 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM
The Mexican Consulate in Kansas City invites you to the temporary exhibition Resplandores: The Ancestral Duality of the Muxe.
The Mexican Consulate in Kansas City presents a visual and cultural exploration of the muxe community of Oaxaca, Mexico, through the artistic vision of Hugo Ximello-Salido. This exhibition celebrates the ancestral gender fluidity of Zapotec culture, reinterpreting Mexican national icons through eight intervened “resplandores” (radiant headdresses), each inspired by emblematic figures featured on Mexican banknotes.
Through a visual journey, visitors will appreciate how these traditional Oaxacan resplendents, usually associated with celebrations, are meticulously transformed by Ximello-Salido as vehicles for expressing identity. It invites viewers to reflect on how ancestral conceptions of gender and identity can influence our current understanding of human diversity. The exhibition not only celebrates the rich muxe cultural tradition but also raises important questions about how hyperlocal practices can impact national and global discourse on identity and belonging.

ABOUT THE ARTIST AND HIS DOCUMENTARY
Hugo Ximello-Salido is a multidisciplinary artist who explores the intersections of culture, identity, and language. Born and raised in Guadalajara, Mexico, his work has been exhibited in the United States, Mexico, and Europe. Her encounter with the muxe community of Oaxaca deepened her understanding of gender fluidity and inspired this project, which examines the deeply rooted gender dualism practices of indigenous Zapotec culture. As part of her artistic exploration, Ximello-Salido produced a documentary about the Muxe community, titled “Muxe: The Language of Art and Culture.”
This exhibition is organized by the Mexican Consulate with support from artist Hugo Ximello-Salido, Los Tules, GANSA Marketing, and Luminus Art Productions.
