Classical Challenge: The Work of Tod Dockstader

The electronic music world recently lost one of the greats, Tod Dockstader.  On the show this evening we will feature works form several of his releases that span his career, including the cd ‘Pond’ (a collaboration with artist David Lee Myers and consisting exclusively of manipulated pond sounds–that’s right, lots of frogs!), as well as ‘Omniphony 1’ (’66), and ‘Eight Electronic Pieces’ (’68).  Dockstader was one of the few electronic innovators that was not associated with a university.  He did it all on his own….and against big odds.  After several ground breaking works in the 1960s, Dockstader ‘retired’ from the music scene only to resurface in the last decade with the above mentioned ‘Pond’ and his trilogy of cds called ‘Aerial’…made up of sounds taken and manipulated from short wave radio frequencies.  Tune in to something perhaps you’ve never heard before….unless you’ve spent the night submerged in a mirky pond on an extra heavy dose of hallucinogens….tonight starting at 9 pm, central, usa time.
