CREATING REFUGE FOR YOURSELF AND OTHERS

Jaws of Justice Radio investigates how we can achieve justice from a system of laws deeply rooted in economic, social and political inequality.  We want to dispel misconceptions created by the news and entertainment industry, politicians and our educational system. We hope you will listen.

Tune in Monday to hear host David Bell speak with Mushim Patricia Ikeda, Buddhist teacher, writer, & consultant.  She teaches meditation retreats for people of color, women, and social justice activists nationally.

https://www.mushimikeda.com/

Mushim has become widely known for her down-to-earth, humorous, and penetrating approach to Dharma and social transformation.  Mushim has taught primarily at the East Bay Meditation Center in downtown Oakland, CA. Her work is based in values of cultural humility, acknowledging the wisdom that is ever-present in individuals and collectives, and the need for expression, empowerment, and co-creative self-determination in marginalized communities.

Mushim has been featured in the award-winning documentary film Between the Lines: Asian American Women’s Poetry and as one of three subjects in the documentary Acting on Faith: Women’s New Religious Activism in America, distributed by the Pluralism Project at Harvard University. As a writer, Mushim is the recipient of the Alice Hayes Fellowship from the Ragdale Foundation.  She has been named an expert panelist of the Global Diversity and Inclusion Benchmarks. She received an honorary Doctor of Sacred Theology degree from the Starr King School for the Ministry.

David and Mushim discuss Buddhist philosophy and finding common ground. The criminal justice system is a whirlwind of human emotions and values. At the same time, almost all criminal cases resolve by agreement. How does this happen?  How can we assure agreement?  How can we avoid conflict?

Many of the people who enter doors to Buddhist practice are seeking spiritual practices and spiritual community to alleviate suffering connected to loneliness and disconnection, feeling “less than,” self-hatred, anxiety, and trauma resulting from discrimination, violence, poverty, oppression and abuse. Buddhist and other wisdom-based teachings and liberatory healing practices help us heal in culturally appropriate ways.

There needs to be an evolution far beyond protest. This calls for a rigorous, comprehensive reimagining of work, of education, of how we feed ourselves and take care of one another. All of us can become realistic visionaries — not “why can’t we all get along” daydreamers, but people who are imagining and then manifesting new ways of doing things with commitment and rigor. We need to be okay with failure, and keep trying.

We’ll play our calendar at the midpoint of the hour.
