Fair Trade Music Special

This week we present a special edition of Art of the Song exploring an initiative of the Musicians Union called Fair Trade Music. It has always been a challenge for musicians to earn a fair wage, and even more difficult in a time when music streaming services pay only a fraction of a penny per play. It’s now more important than ever that musicians be able to support themselves through live performance. We talk today with John McCutcheon and Debra Cowan, both of whom are on the Fair Trade Music Committee of Local 1000, the traveling musician’s local of the American Federation of Musicians. To honor the labor movement, we accompany the interview with labor and union songs.
