The early years of Bob Dylan’s career are effectively depicted in “A Complete Unknown.” Timothée Chalamet captures the nuances of the enigmatic troubadour and does his own singing and playing, as do most of the other cast members. Edward Norton is equally good as folk icon Pete Seeger. Is it accurate? Who knows? Either way, “A Complete Unknown” is an involving biopic that hits most of the right notes.
Spectacular visuals and eerie atmosphere are the main attraction of Robert Eggers’ exceedingly bleak remake of the silent vampire classic, “Nosferatu,” a twist on the Dracula story. The grandiloquent dialogue is skillfully handled by a strong cast that includes Lily Rose Depp and Willem Defoe. It’s cinematically impressive and spiritually depressive.
Ryan Destiny and Brian Tyree Henry are appealing in the inspirational sports biopic, “The Fire Inside,” the true story of Olympic champion boxer, Clarissa “T-Rex” Shields. Her struggles outside the ring are more compelling than her wins and losses inside the ring.
“Homestead” is a faith-based post-apocalyptic drama. Neal McDonough leads the cast in the tale of a wealthy survivalist whose fortress-like compound becomes a flashpoint after a nuclear bomb hits L.A. The filmmakers manage to create some tension in this soapy thriller but be forewarned. To see the rest of the full story, you’ll need to watch additional episodes streaming exclusively on the Angel Studios website.
Nicole Kidman’s strong performance propels the sordid erotic thriller, “Babygirl.” She plays a corporate exec who willfully becomes sexually subservient to a young intern, played by Harris Dickinson. Is it ethically questionable? You bet. Whatever happened to “Me, Too?” But Kidman’s brave work makes “Babygirl” somewhat palatable.
