Maybe the best thing to say about the controversial live-action revision of the Disney’s classic “Snow White” is that it’s not nearly as bad as feared. Rachel Zegler is a fine heroine, and Gal Gadot is an adequately despicable villain. However, the CGI-generated dwarfs are a little creepy and the new songs are bland. The visuals are duly spectacular, but this reimagined “Snow White” is missing one vital element: Magic.
Sir Anthony Hopkins goes slumming along with Bill Skarsgård in the claustrophobic thriller “Locked.” Hopkins is a wealthy doctor who sets an elaborate trap for petty thief Skarsgård, remotely locking him in a high-tech SUV and then torturing him. You can’t blame the actors, but “Locked” is an off-putting and irritating action flick that seems unsure about what it wants to say.
“The Twister: Caught in the Storm” is a harrowing and effective Netflix documentary about the massive 2011 tornado that leveled much of Joplin, Missouri. Several residents tell their traumatic stories and share frightening videos of a high school graduation day that changed everyone’s lives. “The Twister: Caught in the Storm” is an immersive film that skillfully puts the viewer in the center of the chaos.
Can a movie simultaneously be too much and too little? In the case of the Netflix sci-fi action comedy “The Electric State” the answer is, “Yes.” Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt star in an overblown fantasy about the aftermath of a war between humans and robots in an alternate 1990s, where humans are arguably the bad guys. It’s visually interesting, but as subtle as a sledgehammer. “The Electric State” is overcharged.
