“The Wedding Banquet” is a remake, or rather a reimagining of the popular 1993 gay rom com of the same name. Bowen Yang and Lily Gladstone lead the cast in the story of two gay couples who try to arrange a Green Card marriage in exchange for cash for costly in vitro fertilization treatments. Its pacing is very erratic and while this banquet is no feast, a likable cast helps make “The Wedding Banquet” palatable fare.
The lightweight animated fantasy “Sneaks” is about the adventures of anthropomorphic shoes. Anthony Mackie, Martin Lawrence and Laurence Fishburne lend their voices to the story of a pair of blingy designer sneakers who are separated and attempt to reunite, leading to numerous hijinks in New York City. While it’s very derivative, “Sneaks” is still a good fit for its target audience of prepubescent kicks lovers.
“The Dark Money Game” is the series title for two fascinating and alarming documentaries on HBO from Oscar-winning filmmaker Alex Gibney. Both deal with the unintended aftermath of the Supreme Court’s controversial Citizens United decision. The first doc, “Ohio Confidential” follows a dark money trail that led to a $1 billion corruption scandal involving the Ohio State Speaker of the House. It’s incisive and meticulously constructed.
The second doc is called “Wealth of the Wicked,” and it stresses how Political Action Committees -super PACs- and religious groups have used and abused the new rules post Citizens United. Thanks to loopholes, the lines have been blurred between what is a political donation and what is outright bribery. The talking heads provide a wealth of info about the knotty current state of US politics.
