Jaws of Justice Radio investigates how we can achieve justice from a system of laws deeply rooted in economic, social and political inequality. We want to dispel misconceptions created by the news and entertainment industry, politicians and our educational system. We hope you will listen.
Our show will have first, host Keith Brown El’s commemoration of Cameron Lamb on this fifth anniversary of his death in December, 2019.
Cameron Lamb was killed by Kansas City Police when an officer responding to a nearby traffic accident noticed a red truck chasing another car. The police helicopter saw the truck split from the other vehicle and pull up to a house, which was later discovered to be Lamb’s residence. Shortly after, two detectives, Troy Schwalm and Eric DeValkenaere, approached the home from opposite directions. DeValkenaere shot Lamb, killing him while he was backing into his own garage. In June of 2020, Detective DeValkenaere was charged with first-degree involuntary manslaughter and armed criminal action. After a trial, in November of 2021, he was convicted of the charge. He is the only Kansas City police officer ever convicted of killing a Black man. Now, Missouri Governor Mike Parson has granted the commutation of former Kansas City Police Detective Eric DeValkenaere, who had been serving a six-year sentence for the fatal shooting of Cameron Lamb.
Unlike a pardon, a commutation does not erase a conviction but instead reduces a sentence. Gov. Parsons stated he wanted Eric DeValkenaere home for Christmas but he has said nothing about the fact Cameron Lamb has not been home for Christmas with his family for five years.
During the second half of our hour, host Melvin Merritt will tell us about the upcoming Penny Mill Foundation event, bowling at the Diamond Bowl, Independence Missouri, 2 – 4 PM on December 27, 2024. This event is free to the Community. More information can be obtained by calling 816-204-0428 or 816-203-7852. You can also learn more at https://www.pennymillinc.org/
The mission of Penny Mill, a non-profit organization, is to bring various ethnic groups together at events to empower our communities of the importance of our differences as people. Penny Mill wishes to show our young people that we are all necessary in our world, our cities, and our communities. Penny Mill is collaborating with Diamond Bowl, 218 N. Osage, Independence Missouri for Penny Mill’s annual bowling winter event. The goal is to have at least 60 to 70 children from different backgrounds. Penny Mill’s emphasis is to make sure the children are placed on the different teams from children they already know.
On Jaws of Justice, we examine how to find justice in our society. Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those who are.
