Trans Talk: Interview with Kathe Perez and Una Nowling

For those transgender folks who transition to live full time in their correct gender, many are frustrated with their voice. It is especially hard for male to female transsexuals, since hormones will not help feminize the voice, and voice surgery is risky and expensive at best and usually not very effective. The most common option for voice modification, known as voice training, can be difficult. For female to male transsexuals who take hormone therapy, the testosterone will usually make the voice deeper and help their voice match their identity. But what about trans guys who don’t take testosterone?

Sandra and Luke will interview Kathe Perez, an internationally-known speech pathologist who has extensive experience working with business leaders, professional singers, broadcasters and others looking to improve or change their voices. Since 2000, she has focused her work on helping those of us in the transgender community discover their true voices.

But first Sandra and Luke will talk to Una Knowling again. Una is a researcher and writer who founded the informative website called Transas City. We talked to her last month about the first six installments of her research into religion and transgender people. Well, there are now a couple more installments, so we’re going to hear what Una has added related to the historical intersection of transgender people and religion – still an interesting and emotional topic for many.

Of course the show starts out with a rundown of the week’s LGBT news researched by Philip Hooser, and wraps up with the community calendar update.
