LET’S HEAR FROM DECARCERATE KC and MORE CORRUPTION UNCOVERED, A PODCAST CREATED BY TEAM ROC

Jaws of Justice Radio investigates how we can achieve justice from a system of laws deeply rooted in economic, social and political inequality.  We want to dispel misconceptions created by the news and entertainment industry, politicians and our educational system. We hope you will listen.

Jaws of Justice host Bev Livingston, will speak with Derek Buford and Avery Jones, Community Organizers with Decarcerate KC.  Decarcerate KC’s mission is to raise awareness, build power, and create change around issues of incarceration and policing in Kansas City. They are a multiracial, multigenerational organization that centers those impacted by incarceration and policing in order to end the reliance on incarceration and policing, and build a safer Kansas City for all.

Kansas City voters will decide in April, 2025 on whether to renew the public safety sales tax for another 20 years. If approved, the money raised would go, in part, to build a new city jail.  The current quarter-cent sales tax was first approved in April 2002, was renewed in 2010 and is set to expire on June 30, 2026. The tax nets $24 million a year and pays for past and present projects.

Decarcerate KC knows that tax dollars could be better used for things like education, housing, and healthcare. With a transformational bond to fund KC public schools also on the ballot, this April could be a historic moment for our city. Decarcerate KC has many social issues on the table and is committed to envisioning our city as a place of radical care.

In the second half of our hour, Jaws of Justice will play Episode 3 of Corruption Uncovered, a podcast created by Team Roc.  Episode 3 is entitled “Time, Tears, Money”.  The podcast shares stories of the women, the police department and the community of Kansas City Kansas.  According to dozens of women, Roger Golubski, a detective with the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department, raped, assaulted and stalked them, for years. After decades of secrecy and fear, he was scheduled to face trial in Federal Court, charged with assault, rape and kidnapping and accused of much more.  But Golubski’s trial, scheduled for December 2, 2024, never began. We grapple with the questions left in the wake of his death.  How could someone prey on so many people without consequence? Who else knew?  How, if at all, can people be made whole?  And what happens now?

Hosted by Josie Duffy Rice, from Roc Nation and its philanthropic and justice division, Team Roc.  Produced by Pineapple Street Studios.
