LET’S SHRIVEL SOCIAL POWER DYNAMICS BY LOOKING AND TALKING ABOUT THEM

Jaws of Justice Radio investigates how we can achieve justice from a system of laws deeply rooted in economic, social and political inequality.  We want to dispel misconceptions created by the news and entertainment industry, politicians and our educational system. We hope you will listen.

Our show will have two parts.  First, host Terri Wilke will speak with her guests Alice Kitchen, a former adjunct professor and UMKC alumna who has been recognized for her work on human rights, healthcare, and women’s issues and Emily Snyder, President of the Heartland Women in Trades.  They will talk about sexual harassment and workplace gender violence.

Heartland Women in Trades is a non-profit organization of Union tradeswomen offering knowledge and skill which empower each other to become independent, successful tradeswomen through education, mentoring and creating opportunities for women in the trades.

The Civil Rights Act, which prohibited discrimination because of protected status, including sex, was passed in 1964 and this created the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). The concept of sexual harassment in the workplace gained significant recognition in the 1970s, with activists popularizing the term “sexual harassment” after women repeatedly describing experiences of unwanted sexual advances and coercion at work. Courts recognized same sex harassment as a violation of the law in 1998.

The #MeToo movement is a social media movement that began in 2006 with the goal of empowering survivors of sexual violence, especially young women of color from low-wealth communities.  And so, it goes on.

During the second half of our hour, host Terri Wilke will speak with her guests Alice Kitchen and Missouri Senator Tracy McCreery.  Their topic will be internet violence or cyber bullying and the passage of SB 1070.

Senator Tracy McCreery will share her actions on getting SB 1070 passed in MO General Assembly this year and what the Committee is doing already to address sexual harassment and cyberbullying and stalking.

SCS/SB 1070 creates the “Stop Cyberstalking and Harassment Task Force” which shall collect feedback from stakeholders, including victims, law enforcement, victim advocates, digital evidence and forensics experts. The Task Force shall make recommendations on what resources and tools are needed to stop cyberstalking and harassment, as provided in the act.

On Jaws of Justice, we examine how to find justice in our society.  Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those who are.
