Lizzy Plotkin & Natalie Spears

Our guests this week on Art of the Song are Lizzy Plotkin & Natalie Spears. Reveling in the groove of Appalachian fiddle/banjo duets, funky bass lines, and soulful harmony singing, the Colorado based duo draw from a deep history of traditional American music.

In 2012, Lizzy co-founded the folk trio Free the Honey. After a chance meeting in 2014, Lizzy invited Natalie to join Free the Honey on bass. After the band broke up in 2016, Natalie co-founded the string and groove trio, Pearl & Wood, and performed with them until 2018. What then emerged was the duo of Lizzy Plotkin & Natalie Spears.

We spoke with them about their album Just Over the Ridge, which made its way to number one on the Folk Alliance International chart.

In the second half of the show for the Creativity Corner, author, songwriter and business coach, Cliff Goldmacher offers the seventh and final essay in a series entitled The Reason for the Rhymes.
