KKFI is proud to present “MidCoast Live!” celebrating local and regional artists from Kansas City and the surrounding area. Each week, a rotating crew of KKFI programmers will present different artists coming to you live from our studio.  These programmers will tap into Kansas City’s diverse and culturally expansive music and arts scene.  Hear from artists you have never heard of before!  This is KKFI doing what it does best: giving back to the community!

Producer/host Maria Vasquez Boyd welcomes writers/poets Mary Silwance and Melissa Ferrer Civil

Melissa Ferrer Civil (she/they) is a poet, organizer, and educator living on Kaw, Kickapoo, Kansa, and Oceti Sakowin lands. A self proclaimed artist-in-exile, they are preoccupied with constructing new communication for the manifestation of a home we all hold in our hearts. Having delved through the hellish catacombs of mental illness, Melissa emerges with new language forged in the fires of transformation. In 2020, Melissa published her first chapbook, BIRTHING PAINS, through turnsol editions. Melissa is a Charlotte Street Studio Resident, Heartland Arts KC fellow, Chrysalis Institute Alumni and the first Poet Laureate of Kansas City, MO. They are the founder of the arts and organizing event series A Nation In Exile. You can find their publications and videos on their website www.melissaferrerand.com. Mary Silwance is an Egyptian immigrant living in Kansas City and a mother of three daughters. She teaches adult EAL at Penn Valley, is a KCAI writing adjunct, and facilities workshops on writing as well as ecology for area organizations. Mary serves on the editorial teams of Whispering Prairie Press and Flying Ketchup Press, where, as Poetry-Editor-in-Residence, she conceptualized and was editor of, Of Our Own Accord, an anthology of women’s embodied experiences to be released summer of 2024. Mary published her first full-length collection of poetry, We Remember Ourselves, in 2024. You can find her publications, radio, and zoom presentations as well as workshop offerings on writing and ecology at https://www.marysilwance.com. Mary’s work focuses on how the personal and collective are intertwined and writes toward emancipation from within to create a lush future for all beings.
