MIDTERM ELECTIONS PART 3: FLORIDA

In this co-production from WMNF-Tampa & WSLR-Sarasota, Florida, we detail how local elections can
have state-wide and national consequences.

In the first segment, WMNFs Sean Kinane interviews
Andrew Warren who was elected to be the State Attorney twice, in 2016 & 2020. Warren stated that he would not pursue criminal charges against someone for seeking or providing abortions against Florida’s recently written restrictive law. He was then removed by Governor Ron DeSantis for making this and other statements about who he would and would not prosecute.

Diana Debosse reports from WSLR in
Sarasota on recent school board elections. School board elections are supposed to be non-partisan. But
this summer, supporters and possible members of the Proud Boys were elected.

Finally, in the third
segment, WMNFs McKenna Schueler talks with Michele Rayner, Florida’s first openly queer, black
woman state representative. Rayner discusses some of the issues at stake in the upcoming 2022
elections and provides an update on communities of color who were hit by Hurricane Ian last month.
