Jaws of Justice Radio investigates how we can achieve justice from a system of laws deeply rooted in economic, social and political inequality. We want to dispel misconceptions created by the news and entertainment industry, politicians and our educational system. We hope you will listen.
For the first part of our show on February 24, 2025, host Bev Livingston will speak with Chris Lopez and Pateisha Royal, leaders with Decarcerate KC.
Decarcerate KC’s mission is to raise awareness, build power, and create change around issues of incarceration and policing in Kansas City. They are a multiracial, multigenerational organization that centers those impacted by incarceration and policing in order to end the reliance on incarceration and policing, and build a safer Kansas City for all.

Kansas City voters will decide in April, 2025 on whether to renew the public safety sales tax for another 20 years. If approved, the money raised would go, in part, to build a new city jail. The current quarter-cent sales tax was first approved in April 2002, was renewed in 2010 and is set to expire on June 30, 2026. The tax nets $24 million a year and pays for past and present projects.
Decarcerate KC sees the vote to extend the public safety sales tax as harmful. They know that tax dollars could be better used for things like education, housing, and healthcare. With a transformational bond to fund KC public schools also on the ballot, this April could be a historic moment for our city.
Decarcerate KC has many social issues on the table. Stay tuned to learn of all their good work and learn more about possible alternatives to mass incarceration in America.
During the second half of our hour, we will replay our September 2, 2019 show when host Jeff Humfeld spoke with Ricky Kidd, founder of I am Resilience. I Am Resilience helps people maximize their potential and tap into their resilience through keynote speaker talks, leadership, mindset and resilience.

Ricky Kidd was wrongfully convicted in Jackson County Missouri of first-degree murder and armed criminal action. Actual evidence supported that he was not even a criminal and that he was innocent of the charges, however, he served more than 23 years in prison before he was completely exonerated of the charges in 2019.
He will be featured in an upcoming Kansas City PBS production, Innocence Should Be Enough, Clemency in the Midwest, which airs on April 10, 2025 at 7 PM.

On Jaws of Justice, we examine how to find justice in our society. Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those who are.
