Peacebuilding conference, Oct. 25-27, 2018, etc.

This episode of Radio Active Magazine features an interview with Steven Youngblood, Associate Professor of Communication at Park University in Parkville, MO, who is one of the lead organizers of the annual Peacebuilding conference in Kansas City.  This year’s conference is co-sponsored by Avila University, which will have a movie and a panel, Thursday evening, October 25, 4-7:30 PM, Park University, which will host a session the next day, Friday, October 26, 1-4 PM, Johnson County Community College, which will host the sessions on Saturday, October 27, 9 AM – 3:15 PM, and the International Relations Council.

Professor Youngblood is the author of a book on Peace Journalism: Principles and Practices, which appeared last year.  The forward says that “Peace Journalism asks journalists to think more carefully about the choices they make — or which are already made for them by the time they embark on any given story — and the terms on which they are representing issues of conflict, peace, and justice.”  Peace Journalism encourages writers to avoid inflammatory language and try to describe events in terms that would seem reasonable to all sides to a conflict.  That’s the opposite of traditional media typically do.

Co-hosts Spencer Graves and Bill Clause are collaborating on a presentation for the October 26 portion of this conference.
