LISA CARRICO, Program Director for the Missouri Humanites- We are thrilled to announce the much-awaited event for all book enthusiasts in Kansas City – The Heartland Book Festival!

Location: Downtown Kansas City
The first ever Heartland Book Festival is taking place in the heart of downtown Kansas City’s library district! There will be panel discussions featuring national and local authors, musical and theater performances, creative pep talks, writing, tarot, collage, print-making workshops, photography exhibitions, food trucks, featured presentations, and face time with celebrated children’s authors and illustrators. There will also be spots for quiet playing, reading, resting, and reflecting. The event is free for general audiences! The Heartland Book Festival is presented in partnership with Missouri Humanities, Kansas City Public Library, and the Missouri Center for the Book. With the growing appreciation for literature in our community, this year’s festival promises to be a big event.

Lisa Carrico is a program director for the Missouri Humanities and is responsible for coordinating and executing educational public programming throughout the state of Missouri. In addition to planning and implementing the organization’s Signature Series, she oversees their Veterans Programs and the organization’s role as the Missouri State affiliate for the Library of Congress Center for the Book. In 2022 she was an organizer for the first-ever Missouri Book Festival in Washington, Missouri, and is currently coordinating the 2023 Heartland Book Festival in partnership with the Kansas City Public Library – Central Library. She serves as a Board Advisory for the Central II Region of the National Center for the Book and serves as the Board Chair for Turn the Page STL.
Missouri Humanities (MH) is a 501c (3) nonprofit organization that promotes a thoughtful, informed, and civil society through educational public programming and grants to Missouri organizations. MH is funded through grants and donations, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the state of Missouri. MH is a statewide organization dedicated to enriching lives and strengthening communities by connecting Missourians with the people, places, and ideas that shape our society.

Wolfe Brack is a self taught artist born and raised in Kansas City, MO. His work deals mostly with the minute, the unnoticed, and the humorousness that is often overlooked in our daily lives. He is currently the Artistic Director for the InterUrban ArtHouse in Overland Park, KS, and oversees programming, events and gallery exhibitions in the space. He also sits on the board of the National Toy and Miniature Museum on the UMKC campus.
I have a solo show, Unreasonable, up through oct 13th at Habitat Contemporary Gallery, 2012 Baltimore Ave within the Leedy-Voulkos Art Center.
My work was selected for the BAAR Art Journey, a Berlin-based residency and globe travelling exhibition of contemporary art by artists of color from around the world. It made its US debut here in KC this summer and showed simultaneously at Charlotte Street, Habitat Contemporary Gallery, and InterUrban ArtHouse.

The event will be followed by five individually sponsored open mics and readings in the Kansas City area that weekend to bring poetry out into the community for a “poet-tree” effect. We’re looking for new and unusual venues to reach new audiences with poetry readings and spoken word. Contact us, to volunteer, or to bring books. All open mic sign-ups to read your work will be in person first-come-first-serve at each individual location and will be run by individual poets. MARY PAT HENRY, Artistice Director of the Wylliams/Henry Contemporary Dance Company & CAROLYN DAHM, dancer – Mary Pat Henry has performed with the San Francisco Ballet, Ballet West, Radio City Music Hall Ballet and at the Jacobs Pillow International Dance Festival Inside/Out Series. She studied dance at the Atlanta Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, Joffrey Ballet and Martha Graham School of Dance in New York. Ms. Henry has been on the teaching faculty of the Dance Theater of Harlem, The Fled Ballet and the 92 Street Y in New York, The New Jersey Ballet and the Laban Center for Dance in London. In addition, she has been an artist in residence throughout the US and Europe and most recently at the Tianjin Conservatory of Music in Tianjin, China. She is the Artistic Director of the Wylliams/Henry Contemporary Dance Company, a professional contemporary dance company based in Kansas City, MO, which tours nationally. Prior to establishing Wylliams/Henry, Ms. Henry was Artistic Director for the London Dance Collective in London and the Dance Edition in New York. She has choreographed for the Dance Theatre of Harlem, Radio City Music Hall, Off-Broadway in New York, the Victoria Arts Festival in Canada and the Westminster Cathedral Royal Christmas Benefit in London, among others. Ms. Henry has been a dance adjudicator for the National Endowment for the Arts, John Simon Guggenheim Foundation, University of Missouri Research Board, American Dance Awards, Dance Masters of America, New England Dance Awards, North American World Dance Championships and United States Dance Team International Championships. She holds a BFA degree in ballet from the University of Utah and an MFA degree in dance/choreography from Florida State University. Ms. Henry is Professor Emeritus, former Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs and former Chair of Dance at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music and Dance. She is the recipient of the National Endowment Choreographic Arts/Work Award for 2019 as well as having been a recipient of Muriel McBrien Kauffman Award for Artistry/Scholarship, the Muriel McBrien Kauffman Award for Excellence in Teaching, the Robert C. Olson Award for Creativity in the U.S. and the Alberta Dance Festival Teaching Award in Canada.
