SANDRA KEELY UPDATES US ON KC EXPUNGEMENT CLINIC and ALEC KARAKATSANIS, AUTHOR OF COPAGANDA, SPEAKS ON POLICE REFORM

Jaws of Justice Radio investigates how we can achieve justice from a system of laws deeply rooted in economic, social and political inequality.  We want to dispel misconceptions created by the news and entertainment industry, politicians and our educational system. We hope you will listen.

Jaws of Justice host Bev Livingston will speak with Sandra Keely, Ex. Director of 3 Daughters and 1000 Sons, about creating an Expungement Clinic in Kansas City.  The 3 Daughters and 1000 Sons story began with a passion to relieve the devastation communities of color feel as a result of mass incarceration.  Sandra Kay Keely, was stunned in 1988 with the news that her only brother, Calvin, was being sentenced to 50 years in a Michigan State prison.  That began her journey down a path to impact the lives of the justice involved through advocacy that includes career and housing development as well as court supervision.  They are a three-legged stool that supports Family Reunification, Neighborhood Revitalization, and Economic Freedom.

If convicted of an offense, violation, or infraction, a person has the option to seek expungement for his or her record. Expungement entails sealing or eliminating records of a criminal conviction. In Missouri, these records are sealed and can only be accessed via court order, making them inaccessible to the general public. With an expungement, you typically aren’t required to disclose your criminal record in most situations (with a few exceptions), such as during employment, housing, or loan applications.

Expunging a criminal record offers significant value by helping individuals overcome obstacles associated with a criminal history, such as legal rights restoration. It can also contribute to personal and professional reputation and provide a sense of closure and peace of mind.

In the second half of our hour, host Terri Wilke with speak with Alec Karakatsanis, an American civil rights lawyer, social justice advocate, co-founder of Equal Justice Under Law, and founder and Executive Director of Civil Rights Corps, a Washington D.C. impact litigation nonprofit. They will discuss his recent book, Copaganda, a powerful warning about how the media manipulates public perception, fueling fear and inequality, while distracting us from what truly matters. He defines copaganda as a special kind of propaganda employed by police, prosecutors, and news media that stokes fear of police-recorded crime and distorts society’s responses to it.
