Sprouts 6/4

In the U.S., the first case of COVID-19 was confirmed on January 21st, 2020. As a response, many states put safety restrictions on social contact to keep people from spreading the disease. With many businesses and workplaces closing, unemployment rose dramatically–and the U.S. economy had its worst quarter since the 2008 recession.

It is now early June. To get the economy rolling again, much of the country has loosened restrictions on social engagement. On June 1st, the New York Times online map showed 41 states being open, along with 8 partly open.

However. In our country, the death toll from the virus continues to rise. On June 1st, the CDC reported the number of deaths to be over 104,000.

Today, we will talk about what it means to be safe as public officials loosen safety restrictions. From KHOI in Iowa, I along with Anne Kendall will speak with Dr. MarkAlain Dery, an infectious disease specialist from New Orleans who reminds us that COVID-19 is a long-term crisis.

In the second half of the program, from KSFR in New Mexico, Tom Trowbridge speaks with Medical Doctor and researcher, Stuart Kauffman”about new research on social distancing.
