SURVIVING AS A YOUNG G

A young man in juvenile hall tells about his entry into gang life at the age of 12. Oxnard raised and hardened by the hood, this young man talks with Craig Rosen of KPPQ in Ventura, California. They discuss the youth’s childhood, the allure of gangbanging when parents aren’t around, and owning choices and staying committed to the life.

Later, the discussion turns to what possibilities could have arisen for this young man if he had grown up with different circumstances. The youth is proud of his poetry writing and shares some of his verses with Craig.

Craig Rosen is the manager of the Ventura County Arts Coucil’s Arts and Youth Justice Program. Grant funding for the program allows the council to hire local artists to teach poetry, drumming, guitar and crochet.
