The Settlers and debate about Zionism

Voices From the Holy Land chose The Settlers for its November online film salon. A 60-minute online panel discussion about the film has been edited for this episode of UIP. Under the expert guidance of moderator Lara Friedman, filmmaker Shimon Dotan and Rabbi Yakov Shapiro, both scholars of Zionism, engage in a spirited debate about the essence of Zionism.

Dotan’s film The Settlers is the first comprehensive look at Israel’s continued construction of settlements in the West Bank, which is at the heart of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Radicals, idealists, messianic fanatics, true believers and political opportunists, living on the fault lines of an age-old conflict, come face-to-face with history. Today, the settlers threaten to destroy what little peace remains in the Middle East.
