Sally Kane, outgoing Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Federation of Community Broadcasters (NFCB), discusses status of funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) in the US Congress. The FY 2024 Appropriations bill passed out of the Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies of the US House Committee on Appropriations in mid-July completely eliminates funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB). However, the corresponding bill considered by the Senate Appropriations Committee plans to continue funding for the CPB, though at 7 percent less than what President Biden requested.
Ms. Kane has been the CEO of NFCB for nearly 10 years, since early 2014. In that time, she has led NFCB through a comprehensive restructure, grown its membership, stabilized its finances, and launched a host of new services. Before that, she was executive director of KVNF in Paonio, Colorado. She has been in community radio for 20 years serving especially the information needs of rural and minority communities on the local, state and national levels. She plans to continue as CEO of NFCB until they find a replacement.
People concerned about this are encouraged to contact their elected officials in the US House and Senate. You can easily get names and contact information for them by going to house.gov and senate.gov. At house.gov, you are invited to “Enter your zip code” and click “LOOK UP” near the upper right. At senate.gov, “Find Your Senator” is near the upper left. Either should give you easy access to contact information including a phone number and email, typically via their web form. Small groups of 2 or more can often get appointments with congressional staff. That can be useful for multiple reasons. Even if your concerns seem to have little immediate impact, they sometimes help educate the congressional staff about perspectives outside their awareness; that can help lay the ground for more success in the future.
