UN Reproductive Rights

The United Nations World Conference on Population and Development, 1994, was a battleground between feminists and the Vatican. Maria Suarez Toro was there as both activist and broadcaster from Latin America. She tells how she and others from Latin America organized around the document that emerged.

Suarez Toro was a founding producer of the Costa Rica-based Feminist International Radio Endeavour (FIRE)/Radio Feminista Internacional. For many years she did live broadcasting on shortwave and then on the internet. She also taught communications at universities in the US and Sweden, and provided grassroots adult literacy training across Latin America. Her published works include Women’s Voices on FIRE, chronicling the program’s first eight years.
