Bill Sundahl + Out Here Now – Kansas City LGBT Film Festival with: Jamie Rich, Austin Williams, Jon Barnett, Stuart Hinds, & Savannah Rodgers
Mark plays New & MidCoastal Releases from: Shy Boys, Madisen Ward and The Mama Bear, Jessica Paige, The Hillary Watts Riot, Dicta, The Elders, Approach, Melody’s Echo Chamber, Parquet Courts, Sunflower Bean, Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, and Laura Veirs. We’ll also play – Out Here Now Film Fest – related music from: Romanovsky & Phillips, Pat Benatar, and Thelma Houston.
At 10:30 Bill Sundahl, KKFI’s Development Director talks about 90.1 FM’s 30th Anniversary Celebration at The Folly Theatre, June 30, at 7:15 pm. The show will demonstrate KKFI’s diverse programming with two all-star bands led by Clint Ashlock, Director of KC Jazz Orchestra, and Michelle Bacon, of The Band Who Fell to Earth. The bands will back up songs performed by The Elders, Julia Othmer, Sara Morgan, Kemet the Phantom, Kadesh Flow, Una Walkenhorst, Cubanisms, Pablo Sanhueza, Ernest James Zydeco, Bob & Diana Suckiel, Jason Vivone, Gerald Trimble & Jambaroque, Junebug, Robert Rodriguez, Greg Conchola, Rosie’s Bar & Grill, and more. The onstage presentation begins at 7:15 with a KKFI History Presentation and Panel of Founders, followed at 8:00 pm with a showcase of musical artists. More info at: www.follytheatre.org
At 11:00 Jamie Rich, Director of the Out Here Now: KC LGBT Film Festival, June 21-28 at Tivoli Cinemas, joins us as guest co-host for our second hour with special guests: UMKC doctoral candidate, Austin Williams who shares details on the World Premiere of his new documentary film, THE ORDINANCE PROJECT. As Austin writes, “it was one of the most highly contested pieces of legislation in Kansas City history. It marked a turning point, after which discrimination against gays and lesbians could no longer be ignored, and it demonstrated how homophobia and the fear of AIDS were not only intertwined — they were inseparable.” More information at www.theordinanceproject.com
Also joining us is Jon Barnett, who is featured prominently in the film and was one of the founders of Act Up KC and the Human Rights Project, and was the first openly gay man to run for City Council of Kansas City, Missouri. Stuart Hinds, Curator of the Gay & Lesbian Archive of Mid-America (GLAMA) of UMKC shares how GLAMA offered source material and collaborated with Austin Williams on The Ordinance Project.
We’ll also talk with Savannah Rodgers, KC based filmmaker and artist-in-residence at the Charlotte Street Foundation. Savannah is a Board Member for Film Society KC, and a Programmer at the Slamdance Film Festival. In 2018, she was recognized with the Dandelion Award for Women in Film at the First City Film Festival and the Indie Spirit Award at the Bare Bones International Film Festival. Savannah’s short documentary debut DRAGTIVISTS won awards at the Tallgrass Film Festival and Twister Alley International Film Festival and will screen as part of Out Here Now, on Saturday, June 23, at 1:30 PM.
