WHAT ARE THE ALTERNATIVES TO PUTTING PEOPLE IN JAIL?

On February 6, 2023, Jaws of Justice is going to air the recording from a January 30, 2023 event in Lawrence KS, when Justice Matters invited the public to learn about the Vera Report.  So, who is Vera?

The Vera Institute for Justice is a non-profit national organization that partners with impacted communities and government leaders for transformation of the criminal legal and immigration system so that money doesn’t determine freedom; fewer people are incarcerated; and everyone behind bars is treated with dignity.

The Vera Institute works with government and community partners across the country to advance research, analyze policy, pilot programs, and implement solutions on the ground. Working on nearly 60 projects in 40 states, Vera is committed to developing solutions to the most pressing injustices of our day. This page encompasses all of Vera’s work in Kansas, and any related news coverage:  https://www.vera.org/kansas

Vera created a 68 page report about incarceration in Douglas County KS and Justice Matters held a public forum so that every citizen could know what their data revealed – that problems with the incarceration of people in Douglas County Kansas had a disproportionate impact on people of color, women, and persons of lower income to a greater extent than the impact on white, male and higher income residents of the county.  Further, Vera has made recommendations on how those disparities can be remediated.

We’ll play the calendar in the middle of our hour.

Please don’t think we are just talking about a county in Kansas, Vera’s reports show this same story happening from one end of our country to the other.

On Jaws of Justice, we examine how to find justice in our society.  Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those who are.

Teenagers have developing brains which often fail to understand the complex affects their actions may cause. This is even more true for teenagers who have grown up in poverty and feel the impact of violence in the communities, a lack of adequate nutrition, or unstable housing. Despite mountains of evidence that adolescents are not adults, Missouri continues to allow children as young as 12 years old to be tried as adults in our court systems. Come learn more about this policy and help us change it. More info at https://empowermissouri.org/events/
