What if Everyone Voted? featuring Loudlight and Voter to Voter

Host Brent Ragsdale speaks with Davis Hammet, President of Loud Light.  Loud Light is a Kansas organization which fosters a culture of citizen participation.

Davis Hammet began organizing across Kansas on a variety of issues and turned his attention to voting rights following the 2014 election which had dramatically low youth participation. In 2015, he founded Loud Light to address the disparity in civic engagement with the goal to develop a critical mass in youth voter turnout in order to transform Kansas.

Loud Light has registered thousands of young Kansans to vote. The organization runs yearly voter engagement programs at colleges across Kansas, trains young Kansans how to understand and shape power, and produces a popular video series on what’s happening inside the Kansas government that’s followed by citizens and lawmakers alike. Regarding voting rights in Kansas, Hammet advocated for the creation of election audits, contested the 2018 primary raising awareness of uncounted provisional ballots, and successfully sued the government for open records. He’s currently working to research and address the remaining obstacles that block citizens from voting or leave their ballots uncounted.

Host Brent Ragsdale will also interview a guest from Voter to Voter, an organization which launched in 2018.   The voters they connect with turn out at a stunning 25% higher rate than the general public. Now, they are gearing up for 2020.  Almost 92 million eligible Americans did not vote in the 2016 presidential elections.  And in Kansas last year, turnout in local elections averaged just 21% across the state.  For the nation’s democracy to function properly, all eligible Americans must have the opportunity to vote – and be encouraged to do so.

Voter to Voter is a project of The Voter Network.
