At 10:10, Nate Holt and Kirsten Paludan join us to share details about their musical project Semper Viridis and their first EP, SNAKES AND LADDERS to be released on July 14, 2023, through Mixtape Meditation Records. Kirsten Paludan has been at the center of the bands: Olympic Size, Kirsten Paludan & the Key Party, and Starhaven Rounders. Nate Holt’s musical projects include: Asterales, DJNOTADJ, Maria The Mexican, and others. Kirsten & Nate met in the mid 1990’s at the University of Kansas, but didn’t start collaborating until 20 years later. In the second year of the pandemic, Kirsten recorded guest vocals for several of Nate’s tracks created for Asterales. The duo discovered that they were musical kindred spirits and began making original music. At 10:30, Mark talks with Kevin Willmott, Academy Award winning filmmaker, writer, and Professor in the Film & Media Studies Department at The University of Kansas, and Mark von Schlemmer, Professor of Communication & Film at The University of Central Missouri. Kevin & Mark will share details on their documentary film: NO PLACE LIKE HOME: THE STRUGGLE AGAINST HATE IN KANSAS. Kevin Willmott (director/co-writer) won an Academy Award for co-writing the screenplay for Spike Lee’s 2019 film, BlacKkKlansman, and co-wrote Lee’s films Chi-Raq, and Da 5 Bloods. Mark von Schlemmer (Editor/Co-writer) is a television producer, filmmaker & professor. He was an editor on such feature films as Destination: Planet Negro!, The Only Good Indian, CSA: The Confederate States of America, and AIR: A Musical. No Place Like Home: The Struggle Against Hate in Kansas takes the audience on a tour to meet people who have found themselves in a battle for LGBTQ rights in Trego County, Manhattan, Dodge City, Wichita, Topeka and several rural communities. At 11:30 we talk with artist, poet, activist, art administrator, Jade Osborne who works for Mid America Arts Alliance and is a Director for Art In The Loop. Joining Jade is Alisön Hawkins & Fritz Hutchison of the band True Lions, who’ll play live in our 90.1 FM Studios. Art in The Loop is a nonprofit organization engaging artists with the ongoing revitalization of Downtown Kansas City. The Art in the Loop Foundation host performances on Wednesday, July 12, from 5:30 to 8:00 PM in Oppenstein Park, at 12th & Walnut in Downtown Kansas City.
