It Was Genocide: Armenian Survivor Stories
It Was Genocide: Armenian Survivor Stories
Around the world, April 24 marks the observance of the Armenian Genocide. On that day in 1915 the Interior Minister of the Ottoman Empire ordered the arrest and hangings of Armenian intellectuals and community leaders in Constantinople. It was the beginning of a systematic and well-documented plan to eliminate the Armenians, who were Christian, and who had been under Ottoman rule and treated as second class citizens since the 15th century. Why did this happen? Despite being deemed inferior to Turkish Muslims, the Armenian community had attained a prestigious position in the Ottoman Empire and the central authorities there grew apprehensive of their power and longing for a homeland. The concerted plan of deportation and extermination was effected, in large part, because World War I demanded the involvement and concern of potential allied countries. Pope Frances calls it a duty not to forget the senseless slaughter of an estimated one and a half million Armenians by the Ottoman Turks from 1915 to 1923. Concealing or denying evil is like allowing a wound to keep bleeding without bandaging it, Special thanks to Jennie Garabedian, Arthur Sheverdian, Ruth Swisher, Harry Mazadoorian, and Roxie Maljanian. Produced and written by Heidi Boghosian and Geoff Brady.

Every Woman • April 20 2024 – Intentionally Fearless with Caroline Hammond
Calling all superheroes! Join me today at 3pm central time on Intentionally Fearless radio show for an inspiring conversation on unleashing your full potential through storytelling. Caroline could not be with us today, so we are re-airing this show from December last year. We had call-ins telling us how important this conversation was and how it needed to happen more in the world, so when Caroline had a clash, this was my instant first thought to re-air.
My guest today is Rita Smith. Rita is the Senior Adviser for the National Football League on their efforts to end violence against women, and is Executive Vice President of External Relations for domesticshelters.org.
We will dive into the big conversations about the normalization of violence in culture including images, music, verbiage, and "othering" as a means to issue power and control over historically marginalized people. I can't wait to dive into this conversation, as Rita believes that advocacy and social change are intricately connected and cannot be done separately. This perspective is the exact roadmap we are taking at Safe In Harm’s Way to offer safety and healing solutions for survivors of violence, the people who love them, and the communities where they live.
I have goosebumps over the change we can create with our conversation today! People, sports teams, and influencers accessing a megaphone to broadcast needed change, can quickly transform life for people facing violence on and off the field of sports- and into communities desperate for safety, health, and solutions.
Join the conversation by commenting below: How do you think violence is normalized in our current news cycle?

Deluge: Gaza and Israel from Crisis to Cataclysm and Pro-Palestine Protestors Target of Covert Israel Campaign
Deluge: Gaza and Israel from Crisis to Cataclysm
In the last six months of the war by Israel against the Palestinian population of Gaza, a truth has become quite clear: The war is not one of self-defense. And moreover, the October 7 attack by Hamas in southern Israel is being used by the Netanyahu government as a pretext for ethnically cleansing the 2.2 million Palestinians who live there, and get them out of the Gaza Strip. Israel, like America, is a colonial settlers state. It was built on top of an indigenous population whose removal was necessary to establish the new state of Israel. The Palestinians, who were the majority, never got their own state. Three quarters of 1 million of them were driven out, many ended up as refugees in the Gaza Strip. Israel and the United States have crippled the United Nations and undermined international law. The International Court of Justice , the highest court in the world, ruled that Israel was plausibly committing a genocide. This ruling has been ignored by Israel and the United States. Guest - OR Books associate editor Jamie Stern Weiner author of the recently published book Deluge: Gaza and Israel from Crisis to Cataclysm.
Pro-Palestine Protestors Target of Covert Israel Campaign
Well, the cat is now definitely out of the bag. What many of us have long suspected, our guest today has now documented. It is that the Israeli government created a task force to plan and carry out a covert campaign to disrupt and punish pro-Palestinian protesters on the college and university campuses of the United States. And the plan is in full operation. It was first reported in the Israeli website Ynetnews, one of the largest and greatly respected media outlets in Israel. Guest - Professor William Robinson is the Distinguished Professor of Sociology and Global and International Studies, and Latin American and Iberian Studies. He is also a member of the Affiliated Faculty, Chicana and Chicano Studies, all at the University of California, at Santa Barbara.

Plant Time: Inside a Psychedelic Church
At Sacred Garden Community Church in Berkeley, California, services and sacraments are centered on entheogen -- a chemical produced naturally by some plants that, when ingested, can sometimes lead to a heightened sense of spiritual or religious enlightenment. Some call these hallucinogens or psychedelics. They include ayahuasca, mescaline, peyote cacti, and psilocybin mushrooms – all known by indigenous peoples for thousands of years. Psychedelic congregations like Sacred Garden are one of the fastest-growing faith communities in the U.S. and beyond and are taking root in Christian, Jewish, Buddhist, and non-denominational settings. But how sustainable is this model of worship? Is it another form of cultural appropriation? What is the future – if any – of so-called “psychedelic churches?

She was interviewed in Canada by Kristin Schwartz. The author explained that matriarchy does not mean rule by women, but rather that mothers/mother figures are the central organizers of these societies that prioritize the welfare of children, consensus decision-making, and role divisions based upon individuals' gender role choices rather than on biological sex lines. Dr. Heide Goettner-Abendroth is a German feminist and scholar, a founder of the modern matriarchal studies movement, and of the International Academy for Modern Matriarchal Studies and Matriarchal Spirituality (HAGIA).

Part V of the Israel Lobby: The ADL’s Exploitation of the Charge of anti-Semitism
Dr. Sam Brody, Associate Professor of Religious Studies at The University of Kansas, discusses the history of the Anti-Defamation League (or the ADL) and the role it plays as a part of the Israel lobby. Dr. Brody contends that the ADL’s stance that anti-Zionism is the new anti-Semitism is wrong-headed, cynical, and ahistorical. He argues that countering anti-Semitism can only be done in coalition with other liberation movements, including the Palestine solidarity movement. We conclude by discussing the difference between anti-Zionism and anti-Semitism and how muddying the distinctions between them ultimately makes it harder for Jews to address real instances of anti-Semitism.

HOW EFFECTIVE ARE TOUGH ON CRIME LAWS? / REAL MIGRANTS LOVE AMERICA
The first half of todays show is dedicated to discussing how ineffective Tough on Crime laws are. There is a wave of politicians campaigning on how stricter laws and increased police presence will make things safer, but the data simply doesnt support that conclusion. In the second half of todays show, we remember the migrant workers who lost their lives during the Key Bridge collapse in Maryland. We try to reclaim the original narrative suggesting that most folks are as hard working as these individuals who died while making this country better. Our Way Black History Fact is about Willie James Howard; the young man who was lynched in a very similar way to Emmett Till.

Sexting Among Teens, A Felony and No Business With Genocide
Sexting Among Teens, A Felony
A study in the Journal of American Medical Association revealed that sexting is common among adolescents, with at least 1 in 4 teens receiving explicit texts and emails. What we don't hear much about are the legal consequences of such communications. In half of the states in this country, criminal laws classify the act of sexting among minors as a felony. New York, California, New Jersey, and Michigan are among those states. Teenagers who engage in sexting rarely realize the consequences of their actions. Guest - Attorney Andy Stengel is a criminal defense attorney and former prosecutor in the Manhattan District Attorneys Office who has also worked in the executive and legislative branches of New York State government and for the Brennan Center for Justice.
No Business With Genocide

With technology and social media, we have unprecedented access to information and images from all over the world. But witnessing natural disasters, wars and other untold suffering can be debilitating. Thankfully, there are people like todays guest, to remind us that we, individually and collectively, have so much power to change the course of history and create a healthier world for future generations. Guest - Simon Billenness, an advocate for environmental sustainability, human rights, corporate governance, and social justice.
