About

Started in 1988, KKFI has been the Kansas City area’s independent, noncommercial community radio station for over 3 decades now. The KKFI studios have been in 4 different locations in that time, all in the Westport area.

Mission Statement

KKFI is the Kansas City area’s independent, noncommercial community radio station. We seek to stimulate, educate and entertain our audience, to reflect the diversity of the local and world community, and to provide a channel for individuals and groups, issues and music that have been overlooked, suppressed or under-represented by other media.

Philosophy Statement

KKFI is committed to diversity in programming and discourse and seeks to create a climate of mutual respect and collaboration among volunteers and staff.

KKFI’s Commitment to Free Speech

Opinions expressed by our volunteers on their personal media sites are solely their own and do not express the views or opinions of KKFI. The content of those sites has not been reviewed or approved by KKFI and the author is solely responsible for its content.

As a community radio station, KKFI reflects the diversity of our community. As such, there are many opportunities to disagree with each other. KKFI is fundamentally committed to the principle that a completely free and open discussion of ideas shall not be suppressed. We endorse the oft-quoted principle from Evelyn Beatrice Hall, “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.”

Coverage Area

We are fortunate to have a license to operate a 100,000-watt transmitter, the most powerful allowed by FCC regulations.
