From the Vault: East LA Walkouts 50 Year Anniversary

In this program we present Pacificas March 13 1968 interview with then UCLA student Juan Gomez, who was one of the advisors to the High School Students. The list of high schooler demands are read currently by Nancy Sanchez. We will also present comments and sounds from the California State Los Angeles University 50th Anniversary Commemoration event held March 2, 2018.

On February 14, 2018 The deadliest School shooting in United States history took place at Stoneman Douglass High School in Parkland Florida. Since then, High School Students have lead the national conversation on gun control, that has resonated to every corner of this Country.

The history of High School student activism here in America can be traced to a High School of mostly Mexican American students from 5 High Schools in East Los Angeles who walked out of High School beginning March 1, 1968, until Academic and Administrative demands were met.

The 1968 East Los Angeles High School Walkouts set the stage for policy change within the Los Angeles Unified School District and helped grow the Chicano Social identity and Political Movement.
In this program we present Pacificas March 13 1968 interview with then UCLA student Juan Gomez, who was one of the advisors to the High School Students.

We will also present a reading of the list of demands interspersed throughout the interview read by Nancy Sanchez. We will also present comments and sounds from the California State Los Angeles University 50th Anniversary Commemoration event held March 2, 2018.
