Pacifica Radio Archives’ “From the Vault”
Each week the Pacifica Radio Archives chooses a program "From the Vault" of broadcasts in a half-hour program.
This week on From the Vault we celebrate one of the great poets of our day, June Jordan. Born in 1936 in Harlem, Jordan began writing poetry at an early age, teaching and publishing poetry up until her death in 2002.
In 1967, she began teaching poetry at the City College of New York, and in 1968 stopped by the WBAI studios for an interview with famed producer and writer Julius Lester. we’ll listen to parts of this rare interview and poetry reading.
In 1994, Jordan sat down with Pacifica Station KPFK’s Josie Catoggio, co-producer of the weekly program Feminist Magazine and gave one of her most comprehensive recorded interviews ever, from which we’ll sample choice audio.
In 1991, Jordan spoke to a massive crowd gathered in San Francisco just a week after 1991’s Gulf War began, a recording which gives us a sense of her how her civic life was an important component of her social life.
