Judy Chicago 1979 Buffy Sainte-Marie 1975

On this edition of From The Vault we present two special guests who were on Pacifica Radio at a very important point in their illustrious careers: Artist and educator Judy Chicago just before the opening of her Masterpiece installation The Dinner Party at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 1979 and Singer-Songwriter Buffy Sainte-Marie following the release of her first two MCA release Buffy and Changing Woman.

We begin with Judy Chicago, who as you can guess was born in Chicago Illinois. She moved to Los Angeles where she would earn a Master’s degree in Fine Art at UCLA, become an important advocate for the Feminist Arts Program at Cal Arts, began hosting a radio program at KPFK Los Angeles, and cofounded the Los Angeles Women’s Building in 1973.

In 1974 Judy began creating her landmark artistic Installation The Dinner Party. It would take 6 years to complete this masterpiece of 39 place settings arranged into groupings of 13, with the three dining tables arranged into a triangle. It’s official debut was at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art on March 14, 1979 for a three month exhibit.

Then we visit with Buffie St. Marie. At this point in Buffy Sainte-Marie’s Career, she had just released first record on MCA records after leaving the Boutique Label Vanguard Records. Buffy Sainte-Marie continues to give both and Feminist and Indigenous perspective in her songwriting with and evolving musical twist. Buffy Sainte-Marie gives an insider view of surviving as a woman songwriter in the Corporate Music Industry.
