Producer/host Maria Vasquez Boyd welcomes Robert Gann, Nehemiah Cisneros, and James Bryant to the program.

ROBERT GANN, Director, Habitat Contemporary Gallery-Habitat Contemporary is a commercial art gallery with the objective of exhibiting new talent/artwork every six weeks. To encourage community engagement, bimonthly podcasts will be hosted in the gallery. Habitat Contemporary will also invite artists and art professionals to discuss regional arts and culture.
Robert Gann has developed years of exhibition skills curating works by mid-career artists. Serving as the Associate Director of Studios Inc, allowed many established ties within the arts community. Working as purchasing consultant and artist liaison helped to place many works in private and corporate collections. He has curated regional and international traveling exhibitions. Favorable exhibition reviews, by noted art critics, have found placement in national and global publications. An honors graduate from UMKC, he earned a bachelor of arts degree in Art History, with a focus on museum studies. Using his knowledge and experience, he will help to find the perfect work for any collector.

NEHEMIAH CISNEROS, ARTIST- Violent By Design is an arc of Los Angeles-based painter Nehemiah Cisneros’ own “Ghetto Mythologies” created from 2019 to 2021 during the artist’s residency in Kansas City, Missouri. The work merges the graphic aesthetics of 90’s skateboard graphics with the theatrical scale of the Baroque painting of the 1600s. The two-part show challenges American history with humor and satire. While living in the Midwest, Cisneros draws connections to Los Angeles gang culture and the Midwest’s embrace of confederate flags. Through these examples of communities functioning as tribes that show pride through gang symbols painted on buildings or Flags that nod to a racially segregated time, Cisneros summons stereotypical characters of each opposing side, having them do battle amongst one another, questioning the theories of nature and nurture. Are we Violent By Design, or is there hope for a possible redemption to our species?

Violent By Design opened March 12th and will be on display until May 29th in the heart of the Kansas City arts community in the Crossroads. In conjunction with Habitat Contemporary Gallery and Leedy Voulkos Art Center, this series will be exhibited in two parts.

Nehemiah is a Midwestern transplant from Los Angeles. He creates exaggerations of people and life, using a graphic style inspired by pop culture, comics, and skate culture. Working at a large scale make his narrative paintings almost cinematic. Nehemiah first paints a smaller sketch of his idea to compose the image and choose colors, then draws the final image onto large canvas with charcoal, and paints layer by layer with oil, acrylic, and spray paint. Nehemiah is inspired by the California art scene, pop surrealists, professors and fellow students.

JAMES BRYANT, poet/host SpoFest.Virtual spoken word event using Zoom. 7 PM CST first and third Tuesday of each month. Be a featured reader: you can Read poetry, prose or excerpts from longer works. (original works only).
This event is an excellent opportunity for poets, writers and authors to promote their original works. You can read any genre or style of writing, both fiction and non-fiction. The following describes our event format and what readers can expect by participating in the event.
These events take place via Zoom and are streamed live to our SpoFest Facebook page. They are also recorded live and are available to watch on-demand later.
Zoom doors open at 6:30 PM CST. Facebook live stream begins around 6:45 PM CST.

There are four featured readers for each event. Each reader receives 15 minutes to read which is divided up into thre five minute turns at reading. There are three rounds in the event: reading, Q and A and wrap-up. Our event goes from 7 to 9 PM CST. The event begins with the reading round. This round focuses on the poetry and prose. There will be very little chatter. Each reader takes two of their three turns at reading.
Then we have the Q and A round. In this round, each writer will have the opportunity to respond to thre questions. Two of these questions will be provided in advance of the event so you have plenty of time to think on how you would like to answer.
The third question is your own. This is your opportunity to answer a question specific to one of your books, your writing process, or anything else literary in nature.
The event concludes for the four readers with the wrap-up round. In this round each reader takes their final turn at reading.
