Shayna Swanson, Artistic Director at Aloft Circus Arts, an Chicago based contemporary circus company is on tour this March. Friday, March 30, Brave Space will take place twice, at 7:00 and 9:30PM at Voler. Brave Space is an all-woman circus show exploring allyship and trust in an era of divisiveness, all performed under a massive blanket fort that we build with the audience.

Jenny Mendez has served as the Art Center Director at Mattie Rhodes Center for 21 years, serving as Director of Cultural Arts for over 15 years, under her leadership the Mattie Rhodes Art Gallery and Mariposa Gift Shop was established. Her dedication has paved the way for the many successful art programs provided at Mattie Rhodes Center. She attended the Kansas City Art Institute and has served on the Kansas City Municipal Arts Commission, a position for which the Mayor of Kansas City selected her. In addition to participating in numerous art exhibits and expert panels, she has helped to develop Latino culture and art education programs throughout the greater metropolitan area. In 2003, she was chosen by Dos Mundos bilingual Newspaper as one of 25 Up & Coming Kansas City Leaders. She most recently served as a board member for the National Association of Latino Arts and Culture (NALAC), a position to which she was appointed in 2008. Her commitment to artists and community is the key to her success.

Alex Martinez is poet and author living in the Kansas City, Missouri. Born in Mexico, Alex migrated to the US at a young age as an undocumented and unaccompanied minor. He often writes about the trauma of this experience and other social issues that affect him and his community. His poem “Daddy” will be published in an upcoming chapbook from the Hawaii Review this fall. Alex is artist in resident at Charlotte Street Foundation, working on a community arts pilot program from funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, Our Town grant. His first book Disclosure: Confessions of a Queer in Crisis was release in April 30, 2018.

Alex performs with Resistencia, a brown & queer group of poets. He is also an organizer for Brown Voices. Brown Pulse: a LGBTQ POC group working to create a safe and welcoming space for queer folk of color. Alex is a DACA recipient and he is the current Director of the Kansas/Missouri Dream Alliance (KSMODA), a pro-immigrant group seeking equal opportunities for undocumented youth and their families. Alex Martinez is unapologetically brown, queer, and unafraid and his community work and poetry reflects that.
Alex is a rotating producer/host for Global Roots Radio that airs Sunday 3pm on 90.1fm KKFI Kansas City Community Radio.

Iván Garnica, Donor Relations and CMR Manager ArtsKC-A native Kansas Citian, Iván graduated from Drury University with his Bachelor of Arts in arts administration and art history. Afterwards, he accepted a graduate assistant position and went on to earn his Masters of Nonprofits & Civic Leadership. During this time, Iván managed an off-campus university art gallery and was able to plan monthly exhibitions in order to showcase regional artists. After six months as an intern at ArtsKC, Iván headed off to work at the Head for the Cure Foundation, a nonprofit focusing on raising funds for brain cancer across the nation. Returning to ArtsKC, Iván has now taken on the new role as the Donor Relations & CRM Manager.
During his free time, Iván loves to paint and is continuing to build his body of work. His friends and family are a very important part of his motivation and always keep him laughing and smiling.
