Artspeak Radio with Grant, Wilson, KCAI, and Bello

Artspeak Radio, Wednesday, December 1, 2021, noon – 1pm CST, 90.1fm KKFI Kansas City Community Radio, streaming live audio www.kkfi.org

Producer/host Maria Vasquez Boyd welcomes Jim Grant, Jim Wilson, Jonah Criswell, Sophie Francour, and Katherine Bello.

KATHERINE BELLOW-As a painter, the artist approaches every blank canvas with no preconceived ideas. It’s that invitation to the unknown that begins the process.
Recalling a place or a moment of time, she enters the canvas with swaths of paint and loose line drawings. There is often a reference to pull from – such as a landscape or a memory. Layers of paint create depth and mystery while brush marks and pencil lines feel raw and exposed. The interplay of color is organically and purposefully mixed. Paint is applied as thin washes for transparency and thick and heavy to create textural surfaces. Spills and splatters are often encouraged and incorporated into the composition.
