Freeze Frame: “The Teachers’ Lounge” (PG-13), “Suncoast” (R), “Upgraded” (R), “Genius: MLK/X” (Unrated)

“The Teachers’ Lounge” is a German film deservedly nominated for the Best International Feature at this year’s Oscars. Leonie Benesch plays a naive novice schoolteacher who sets off a volatile firestorm when she accuses one of her fellow employees of petty theft. Smart and involving, it plays like a thriller and can be seen as a microcosm of wider social discord. “The Teachers’ Lounge” is an unnerving and involving surprise.

The Hulu drama “Suncoast” tackles the thorny subject of grief. In this semi-autobiographical film from writer/director Laura Chinn, Nico Parker plays an insecure teenager whose dying brother is sent into hospice. Laura Linney plays her stressed-out mom and Woody Harrelson is a sympathetic pro-life activist. “Suncoast” is well-meaning but a bit meandering and manipulative, made bearable by a likeable cast.

Standard rom-com tropes abound in the featherweight Amazon Prime offering, “Upgraded.” Camila Mendes plays an art auction house intern who meets an English aristocrat on a flight to London. Sparks fly and she pretends to run the company to impress him. Naturally, complications arise. It’s very predictable, but fans of Hallmark Channel movies will find “Upgraded” comfortably familiar.

The fourth season of the series “Genius” is now on Disney+ and Hulu. “MLK/X” covers the contrasting journeys of Civil Rights leaders Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcom X and shows how their differing faiths motivated them. Kelvin Harrison Jr. and Aaron Pierre give strong performances in a handsomely produced drama, but these compelling life stories have been presented better in previous films. “Genius: MLK/X” is a respectable but standard biographical series.
