Freeze Frame: “Wonka” (PG), “Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget” (PG), “The Family Plan (PG-13)

Did we really need a musical prequel to the classic 1971 fantasy “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory?” No. But I’m still glad that we got one. Timothy Chalamet is terrific as the young Wonka in this tuneful and imaginative lark that serves as Willy’s origin story. Yes, it’s corny and old fashioned, but it’s also visually creative, funny and occasionally touching. It lacks the caustic edge that was the hallmark of author Roald Dahl’s original story, but writer/director Paul King, who’s best known for the acclaimed “Paddington” movies, has delivered an entertaining Christmas present suitable for family audiences.

It’s taken 23 years, but the folks at Aardman Studios, the home of Wallace & Gromit, have finally delivered a Netflix sequel to their fowl 2000 comedy, “Chicken Run.” “Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget ” pits a comic group of feathered friends against a high-tech outfit bent on turning them into fast food entrees. The stop-motion animation and art direction are egg-cellent. It’s all very silly and lacks the wit of some of Aardman’s other movies, but it’s adequate fast-food entertainment for the kids.

Mark Wahlberg and Michelle Monaghan lead the cast in the Apple TV+ action comedy, “The Family Plan.” Mark plays a Buffalo car salesman and father of three who was once a covert assassin. He takes the fam on a trip to Vegas in an attempt to protect them while he confronts some nefarious forces from his past. The plot will give you flashbacks to any number of other movies with similar setups. While it’s overlong and overly familiar, the game cast adds a spark, making “The Family Plan” a passable time waster.
