The Hao culture of Ukhrul, in the mountains of Manipur, Northeast India!

Rakmila Shaiza, a community activist from the town of Ukhrul in the mountains of Manipur, Northeast India, will join us to talk about her journey to the United States and what it has taught her about the need for her people, the Hao, to rediscover the culture of their ancestors. We will explore the traditional Hao lifestyle, rituals, music and art, and discuss the ways contact with Western culture has impacted the Hao people over the last 120 years. We’ll also play recent field recordings of traditional Hao songs and music by contemporary Hao musicians.
