Earth and Sky

KKFI listeners are treated to a 2 minute program which makes science fun and interesting, called “Earth & Sky.” Produced by radio veterans Deborah Byrd and Joel Block, this winning program airs on over 950 radio stations across the country, and since 1991 has grown into one of the premier programs of its kind in the world. Prior to starting the Earth & Sky series in 1991, Block and Byrd were the hosts of the popular astronomy only program “Star Date,” producing over 5,000 episodes.. The two left “Star Date” 1991 to begin their new program, which intended to focus on the contrasting worlds of both the heavens and the terra firma. As host Deborah Byrd says on the Earth & Sky website, “The idea for Earth & Sky came into my head in one piece — whoosh! The idea was to have these two opposite but interconnected things — me and Joel, a man and a woman — talking about opposite but interconnected things — the Earth and the sky.”

Today, listeners tuning in to the program can expect to hear segments about a wide variety of topics. Many of the programs focus on specific astronomical events, giving listeners an idea of what to look for in the night sky. In addition to reporting on the current events of  astronomy, “Earth & Sky” also produces programs which focus on new scientific discoveries, established scientific theories, environmental concerns, as well as listener questions.  The program is currently funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. “Earth & Sky” also produces and excellent award winning website, which has daily information about the program, the scientific world, sky charts, an online store, and much more.
