October – Domestic Violence Awareness Month and Stop Mass Incarceration Month

We have two guests in studio today to tell you about upcoming events in our community. Melvin Merritt talks with Ms E of Give Yourself Real Love (G.Y.R.L.) about their classes to teach women how to help their sister’s who are victims of domestic violence. Jeff Humfeld talks with Lora McDonald of Metro Organization for Racial and Economic Equity (MORE2) to talk about their focus for the upcoming Missouri Legislative session.

As our title says October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and on our October 27th broadcast Melvin Merritt will be back to address this issue in greater depth than we will today. October is also Stop Mass Incarceration Month and on October 13th Margot Patterson will be bring us more information on who and what is happening on this subject.

The Criminal Justice Task Force will meet tonight, Monday October 6th from 6:45 to 8:45 pm at the Church of the Good Shepard, 4947 Chouteau Drive, KCMO. You are invited to bring friends and family as well as non-perishable food items for the weekend backpack program to help underprivileged students. Mothers of Incarcerated Sons and Daughters will have their monthly meeting Saturday, October 11th, from noon to 2pm at the Waldo Branch Library, 201 East 75th Street, KCMO If you have a loved one that is incarcerated and need advice and support MISD have members that may be able to help.

The KC Mother’s In Charge are mother’s of murder victims and have come together to work on Violence Prevention, Education & Intervention for KC youth, young adults, families and community organizations.
The KC Mothers In Charge Healing Support Group will be meeting Thursday October 16th, 6pm at 1734 E 63rd St, KCMO. They will also be meeting outside 4222 Forest on Friday October 10th at 5:30 PM to canvass the surrounding neighborhood, asking for information about the murder of Teresa Kellog. CCO, Communities Creating Opportunity is sponsoring a community conference, titled Gun Violence – Finding Common Ground, Taking Action. The conference will be held Monday, October 13th, from 9AM-3PM at the All Souls Unitarian Unversalist Church, 4501 Walnut, KCMO. Now is time to have a reasoned discussion.
