Learning by Undoing – Environmental Remediation

Host Teresa Wilke speaks with Bob Jurgens, the Bureau Director of the Kansas Department of Health and Environment Bureau of Environmental Remediation, and John Jurgensmeyer, Environmental Remediation Program Director with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.  They will each us tell us how contamination is addressed under state statutes and practices.  Both Directors acknowledge a history of pollution in Missouri and Kansas, what they call “legacy sites”.

“Learning by doing” is a theory of education expounded by American philosopher John Dewey. It’s a hands-on approach to learning which means students must interact with their environment in order to adapt and learn.

The good news is – the good ol’ days are now!

Regulations and inspections no longer allow industries to carelessly use hazardous materials and any chemical compound has got to be properly discarded to insure a healthy environment.

Bob and John will explain how their Departments address abandoned sites containing hazardous substances – the legacy sites.  Not stopping there, our state governments disallow such sites in our future, or at least to the best of our knowledge.  We hope you can tune as we become more knowledgeable about where we have been and where we are going.

We at EcoRadio KC are glad to encourage awareness and protection of our world. We can create a sustainable present for a sustainable future! This will be a great radio hour!
